Direct Acccess Hostel

Hostel

What are the Direct Access Hostel and Bedsits?
Roundabout's Direct Access Hostel consists of two double and three single rooms within a hostel environment. The rooms are basically furnished and maintained to a reasonable standard. The communal areas include a kitchen, laundry room, lounge, Skills for Life Training Room and two bathrooms. The Bedsit Accommodation is located in the same building and is comprised of eight bed-sitting rooms arranged in groups of four. Each group of four has its own lounge, kitchen, bathroom and shower room.

Aims of the Direct Access Hostel and Bedsits.
The Direct Access Hostel provides short-term emergency accommodation with support. This support includes an Assessment of need, a Resettlement Plan based on this Assessment, and the identification and move-on to the most suitable placement available to serve the Young Person’s needs. In the Bedsits, we provide medium term accommodation with support and preparation for moving into one’s own tenancy. The bedsits are ideal for Young People who are preparing to live independently and benefit from daily staff support, particularly support around developing the skills necessary to maintain their own tenancy. Young People are expected to be committed to working with staff and to show consideration to other residents and to the neighbours.

Who can apply?
The hostel is direct access. Referrals are taken form other agencies and Young People are also able to refer themselves. Young People are only accepted into the Bedsits after they have lived in the Direct Access hostel.

Criteria for acceptance

Age range - 16-21 years (inclusive)

Offences - people, who have been convicted of sexual offences, offences involving extreme violence or criminal damage by arson, are normally excluded from the scheme although we will consider each case on its merits. We accept people with bail conditions but we do not enforce them.

Disability - The Direct Access Hostel has limited disability access. The Bedsits do not have disability access, so they would be unsuitable for people with restricted mobility.

How the scheme works
We help young people to develop independent living skills and move them into appropriate secure accommodation. The ethos underpinning all aspects of the work is one of empowerment, encouraging young people to actively engage in their resettlement, through the following services:

Keyworking - all residents are allocated a keyworker, who will work with you to help you develop the practical skills necessary to maintain your own home. You will be expected to see your keyworker every week

Assessment All residents take part in an assessment of their needs. This includes a risk assessment and the young person’s own issues and wishes. The assessment identifies the goals which the young person will need to achieve in order to gain and maintain their own tenancy. This will include identifying housing options and agreeing with young people the areas where they need to develop new skills.

Resettlement Plan - this will be drawn up with your keyworker and will consist of individual tasks to help you achieve the goals identified in your assessment. Young people are expected to work on your resettlement plan. In Direct Access, the resettlement plan will be reviewed every week, with a more formal review of progress every three weeks. In the Bedsits, the plan will be reviewed fortnightly with a more formal review every three months.

Skills for Life and Resettlement Training - we offer accredited training in the skills and knowledge necessary to maintain your own tenancy. The training is designed to work alongside resettlement planning and is offered at different levels to meet individual need.

Activities - a regular programme of activities is available for young people to access, to encourage them to meet new people, increase their confidence and develop new skills.

Participation starting from their involvement in developing their own resettlement plan, to recruitment of staff and providing feedback about their experience of Roundabout, the wishes and views of Young People help to shape the service they receive. Through participation, the self-confidence and esteem of young people is increased. Roundabout values the participation of Service Users in the decision making progress. We believe that User Participation helps the organisation to raise the quality of the services we offer.

All young people have the right to access all services offered in the Hostel and they are encouraged to take part in all services offered. The services offered are not compulsory.

Rules and Sanctions
Roundabout has a few basic rules which residents are expected to comply with. They asked are not to break the law on or around Roundabout premises and to comply with Health and Safety requirements. No forms of bullying, harassment or violence are tolerated. Residents are asked not to cause a nuisance to the neighbours. Alcohol is not allowed in the Direct Access Hostel.

If residents break the rules they will be issued with warnings which can lead to eviction. Roundabout staff will proactively support young people in their efforts to comply with the rules.

Complaints and Appeals
All residents have the right to complain about the service they receive and to appeal against any decision made by Roundabout which will affect them. This is explained to them when they are being booked in and they are given written instructions of how to complain at Roundabout. In the first instance, residents should speak to staff about any problems they have. We will see if we can sort out the problem straight away. Written complaints or appeals should go to the Project Manager. They will be answered within five working days. Service Users may appeal against this decision to the Service Manager. They will get a reply within five working days. If they feel that the procedure has not been followed or that they have been unfairly treated, they may appeal to the Executive Committee or to South Yorkshire Housing Association as laid out in the Complaints Procedure.
